Natural remedies in treating Depression

Depression is when a person experiences low mood persistently, to the point that it starts to interfere with her daily life. Natural remedies:

  • John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum): has long been used in folk medicine for sadness, worry, nervousness, and poor sleep. Numerous clinical trials suggest that St. John’s wort may be effective mild to moderate depression. Although researchers aren’t exactly sure how St. John’s wort works to fight depression, it’s believed that it may be associated with the herb’s ability to make more serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine available in the brain. This is important because these three neurotransmitters help to boost mood and improve the symptoms of depression.
  • Ashwagandha: an Indian plant that has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine, contains powerful adaptogenic compounds that are known to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. The plant is also known to help fight degenerative brain conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as inhibit the growth and spread of cancer cells. Several studies, including one published in the journalPhytomedicineback in 2000, have found that ashwagandha works as well as, or better than, antidepressant drugs at relieving anxiety and treating depression symptoms. And ashwagandha naturally prevents stress-induced free radical damage without causing harmful side effects .
  • Rhodiola rosea: works by increasing the sensitivity of your neurons, including two neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. These neurotransmitters help to increase focus and memory, and improve mood.
  • 5-HTTP: is produced by the body as a precursor to the happy hormone serotonin and the sleep hormone melatonin. As a result, it increases serotonin levels and helps to relieve moderate depression and anxiety. 5HTP supplements are thought to work in a similar way to certain selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) by increasing the level of serotonin in the brain.
  • S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe): is an important methyl donor, an essential step in the synthesis of several neurotransmitters from amino acids in the diet. The antidepressant effects of SAMe are probably related to multiple mechanisms of action including increased brain levels of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. In addition to the effects of SAMe on the above neurotransmitters, it has been suggested that antidepressant effects of SAMe are mediated by anti-inflammatory effects, changes in neuronal membrane fluidity, increased rate of serotonin turnover, inhibition of norepinephrine reuptake, and beneficial synergistic effects of SAMe on dopamine activity. Antidepressant effects of SAMe may also be mediated by anti-inflammatory effects and changes in neuronal cell membrane fluidity.
  • Saffron: is a well-known Persian spice used for its ability to help the digestive system heal. Because most neurotransmitters are made in the digestive tract, this might be the reason saffron has been shown in studies to elevate low mood. As the most expensive spice, it is high in carotenoids and B vitamins. In studies, saffron has been compared to both Prozac and Imipramine, and found to work at least as well, or better, with less side effects.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: consuming plenty of omega-3 fatty acids may offer powerful protection against depression.
